Where are you before you awaken in the morning? In a place as dead as sleep, muscles as relaxed as an extended palm leaf firm on its tree. What do you think just before you awaken? Do you ever remember a dream?
Are you an elderly person who asks God each day for Him to give you the ability to walk, even run? To cast away your physical therapy cane or walker, to run instead of being tied to a wheelchair? Do you feel the freedom at night of the impossible? Is this how God comes to you to fulfill all your desires?
Do you suffer from Depression, the illness of sadness when it is hard to smile or feel happy, on the verge of tears all day. When you awoke this morning, somehow God was with you and He caused song to be sung from your lips as you awoke from a deep sleep. What song were you singing? Gilligan's Island's theme song of all songs! Wow! "If not for the spirit of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost, the Minnow would be lost! The Minnow would be lost!!"
Song in front of you but not as a Pied Piper, instead as a Shofar. The Shofar calling us to beware, to not become engulfed in Depression, to occasionally have sadness when there is a family day of death, a Yahrzeit, but with Rosh Hashanah on its way, the 1st of Tishrei, a new month kicked off with a new song.
We can routinely play the Shofar or we can find a new tune. A woman can play the Shofar for another woman, or a man for a man, the music is all-inclusive, and is a beautiful sound.
We can finally sing the Shehekeyanu, the "Blessing for the New Season" as we daven with the Shofar. The sound of a lost ram, sacrificed instead of Isaac, the saving of the life of the son of Avraham and Sarah, alive, guarded by Angels, Avraham loving his son and allowing him to live, to succeed him, to lead a nation of the Jewish people, under the protection of thousands of Angels and the Jewish ritual with 613 Commandments. Can we follow them all?
The Shofar will help us. Stand up as it blows, stand up or sit up if you are in a wheelchair, acknowledge the Greatness of One God, the only God there is, Him being your constant Friend and Companion, always there when you need Him.
Have a smile and a recognition of the life of Isaac and our eternal happiness as we know our dead is reincarnated.
The Psalms tell us: "God will fulfill all our desires...God visits His beloved in their sleep."
May all our loved ones rest in peace.
